Shepard’s Fort Lauderdale estate is listed for $4.95 million

One of the first homes ever built on Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s iconic Las Olas Boulevard has hit the market for $4.95 million.

Consisting of nine bedrooms and seven bathrooms, the property covers more than 7,400 square meters.

What is now recognized as one of the most prominent streets in the US, the boulevard was once the dirt road where this home, the Shepherd Estate, stood.

It then transformed into an upscale neighborhood with plenty of fashion boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and sidewalk cafes – popular with locals and tourists alike.

In 1989, Shepard’s estate was declared a historic landmark. Once owned by Lawrence and Charlotte Shepherd of Pennsylvania, former owners of the Hanover Shoe Company, the property was boarded up and began to deteriorate after their deaths in the 1980s.

Many Fort Lauderdale residents feared the apartment would be turned into commercial space, but a 1989 landmark helped protect the residence.

Built in 1926, the home, located on Boulevard E. Las Olas 1620, has since been renovated and meticulously restored.

Designated a masterpiece by George Fink, it is recognized as a hallmark of Mediterranean Revival architecture, with arched openings and windows separated by decorative turned columns, columns, balconies and a central tower with an open belfry.

It was originally built as a summer home for road builder William Snyder. Soon after its construction, the estate became a place of frequent social gatherings.
