Republicans are ramping up a new target of the culture war: gas furnaces | Republicans

Aafter Joe Biden’s administration announced it was considering regulating — or banning — gas stoves, Richard Trumka of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) offered some words of clarity: “To be clear, the CPSC is not coming for anyone’s gas stoves.” he tweeted.

“You’re going to have to pry my gas stove out of my cold, dead hands,” replied Matt Walsh, a right-wing political podcaster and Daily Wire columnist.

Despite Trumka’s words of reassurance and the fact that no regulation or ban has been enacted or announced as a course of action, conservative figures are trying to turn gas furnaces into the next culture war.

Gas stoves have become a hot-button issue in the first weeks of 2022, as new research reveals that the devices are emitting toxic chemicals and carcinogens, even when turned off. The report found that 12.7% of asthma cases in children in the US were due to the presence of gas furnaces.

Because low-income renters are more likely to be saddled with a gas stove, Democrats including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed offering rebates through the Inflation Reduction Act. Americans could get up to $840 to replace their devices.

Any regulation would only affect new buildings – there won’t be a door-to-door mob of Democrats confiscating old burners. But as with the masks and M&M packaging featuring only women, the fear of losing these devices seems to have created a new culture war.

“ABSOLUTELY NOT,” Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green wrote on Twitter. “Apparently they don’t even cook.” Idiots.”

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, fresh off writing Fox News op-eds complaining about “Biden’s Awakened Army,” warned Twitter followers: “Democrats are coming for your kitchen appliances. Their desire to control every aspect of your life knows no bounds – including how you make breakfast. They just can’t help themselves.”

“COME AND GET IT,” read the caption on a pixelated photo of a mint-green stove hovering slightly menacingly against a white background. This is published by the Libertarian Party of Oklahoma. Other right-wing groups joined the team complaining on Twitter, like the House Judiciary GOP, which tweeted: “Securing the border? Not. Curb inflation for working families? Not. Ban gas stoves? YUP.”

An undated photo of Jill Biden using a gas stove to saute spinach also made the rounds on Reddit and Twitter as an example of liberal hypocrisy. “Because the rules only apply to us American taxpayers,” wrote one Reddit user.

Most American households have electric stoves, but 38% of homeowners still cook with gas. They are primarily located on both coasts: California and New Jersey have the highest rates of gas furnaces in the country, along with Nevada, Illinois, and New York. Meanwhile, states like North Carolina, Tennessee, and North Dakota have mostly electric furnaces.

Despite the potential risks, the direct heat provided by gas stoves is a popular choice for home cooks – allowing cooks to precisely control the temperature and char eggplants and peppers. But a new study found that one in eight cases of asthma in children in the US is due to pollution caused by cooking on gas stoves.
