McDonald’s Unveils First Automated Location, Social Media Worries It Will Cut “Millions” Of Jobs

McDonald’s has opened its first automated restaurant, with machines handling everything from taking orders to delivering food – and sharing opinions everywhere.

“When you enter the test restaurant concept, you will notice that it is significantly smaller than a traditional McDonald’s restaurant in the US,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “Why? The features — inside and out — are aimed at customers who plan to dine at home or on the go.”

The Fort Worth, Texas, location uses technology to minimize human interaction when ordering and picking up food. The restaurant has an “Order Ahead Lane” where customers can take orders on a conveyor belt, Newsweek reported.

The initiative is part of McDonald’s “Accelerate the Bows” plan, which works to grow and innovate the customer experience, but not everyone is happy with the direction the restaurant chain has chosen.

TikTok user @foodiemunster shared a video of his experience, which shows a user walking into a small but empty McDonald’s with a single kiosk to order food and a conveyor belt delivering it when it’s ready.

“There is a delivery pick-up area inside the restaurant for couriers to pick up orders quickly and conveniently,” McDonald’s explained in its statement. “There are also kiosks, where customers can place their to-go orders, and a pick-up shelf for orders.

“Outside the restaurant, there are several parking spaces designated for curbside pickup, as well as parking spaces for delivery drivers.”

McDonald’s emphasized that restaurant crew will remain to help prepare orders, and eliminating tasks such as operating the register and delivering food to the front or drive-thru lanes will help improve the team’s ability to assemble orders.

“The technology in this restaurant not only allows us to serve our customers in new, innovative ways, it gives our restaurant team the ability to concentrate more on order speed and accuracy, making the experience more enjoyable for everyone,” explains Keith Vanecek, franchisee who manages the test restaurant.

The social media response showed that people disagreed on whether this was a positive or negative change: some people celebrated the innovation as a step towards faster and more accurate ordering, but others took a more cynical view and predicted that it would lead to the loss of “millions of jobs “.

“Honestly, if they go through with this, I’m just going to boycott McDonald’s. Their food is subpar at best,” said one user.

McDonald’s did not respond to a FOX Business request for comment by press time.
